Can I charge my electric car from a domestic socket?

IEC/EN/CEI 61851-1 - 2° EDITION : RECHARGING MODE

The legislation provides for this in certain situations. Standard household power sockets and related systems are often not conceived and designed to withstand high powers without being damaged for many continuous hours (8-12h). Home safety is even more important precisely because recharges often take place during the night, in a place that is often unattended.

MODE 1

Connection of the EV to the AC mains with domestic connectors up to 16A, 30mA class A differential protection, upstream.

MODE 2

Connection of the EV to the AC mains with domestic connectors up to 16A or industrial connectors up to 32A, 30mA class A differential protection upstream, control device on the cable.

MODE 3

Connection of the EV to the AC power supply network with dedicated connectors, 30mA class A or B differential protection upstream, control device in the station.

MODE 4

Connection of the EV to the d.c. power supply network with external charger.

The mode defined as MODE 3 is the most common mode for charging electric vehicles, in public and domestic areas.

Furthermore, depending on the type of cable connection, there are three cases:

CASE A

Connection of the EV to the power supply with cable and mobile plug permanently fixed to the EV.

CASE B

Connection of the EV to the mains with a detachable cable with plug and mobile socket.

CASE C

Connection of the EV to the power supply with cable and mobile socket permanently fixed to the station.
